A true Canadian story: Community rallies behind local hero in time of need

Thirty years ago, Dave Canadian helped turn the Kahnawake Mohawk territory into a powerhouse for national amateur wrestling.

“Coach Dave” mentored generations of Indigenous youth on the wrestling mats, pushing them to expect more for themselves and their community. So when Canadian was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening lung disease — one that requires a double lung transplant — his friends and neighbours rallied to his aid.

Earlier this month, donations began pouring in to help defray costs not covered by Canadian’s insurance providers. The local high school and radio station have organized fundraisers and a “Dave Canadian Appreciation Day” to honour the coach.
